The workshops in this volume are grounded in a theory-based model called Strategic Transformation and Resiliency Theory for Systemic Change (START-SC). START-SC represents the author's conceptual framework for transformation in organizational settings. The constructs presented are appropriate for all change agents, but content in this volume will focus specifically on middle schools. START-SC workshops examine relationships among key variables, including resiliency factors, perspective transformation phases, and action research strategies for systemic school change. The workshops employ a case-study approach to learning. In addition, participants will (a) examine factors that impede harmful and counterproductive behaviors in schools, (b) analyze cases to identify areas for school-wide change and renewal, and (c) practice using an action research approach to organizational problem solving. START-SC workshops provide participants an opportunity to critically reflect on issues that impact the organizational environment. This model for systemic change is based on the premise that when stakeholders work together to promote resiliency among students and fortify environmental factors that increase safety in the school setting, positive change and growth will occur.

Lorrie C. Reed is a semi-retired educator, systemic change expert, mentor and consultant whose professional experiences include service as a secondary school teacher, high school associate principal, middle school principal, curriculum director, university professor, ordained minister, director of Christian education, and associate pastor. She is the author of several books and holds a Ph.D. in Research Methodology, a Master's degree in Educational Administration, a Master's degree in Theological Studies, a Master of Divinity degree, and a Bachelor's degree in English education. Her writing and research highlight educational, social, spiritual, and community mechanisms for reinforcing justice and inter-generational hope, healing, and resilience among all people. She is an advocate for systemic change in organizations. Dr. Reed is the founder of Center Street Consulting. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Spending time with family is one of her favorite pastimes. She lives in Chicago with her husband of more than four decades.
