Die deutsche Sprache hat im Nationalsozialismus und nach 1945 tiefgreifende Wandlungen erfahren. Dies gilt für den mündlichen Gebrauch vielleicht noch stärker als für den schriftlichen, was jedoch mangels geeigneter älterer Tondokumente kaum an Datenmaterial nachzuweisen ist. Weitgehend unverändert erhielt sich das Deutsch der Weimarer Republik jedoch bei Emigranten, und wahrscheinlich am besten bei jenen ursprünglich ca. 55.000 deutschsprachigen Juden, die während der Hitler-Zeit in Palästina einwanderten und dort auf Grund der besonderen Sprachbarriere, die das Hebräische für die meisten darstellte, nolens volens oft noch lange an ihrer Muttersprache festhielten. Von der letzten Generation dieser noch in Europa geborenen ehemals deutschen und österreichischen Juden, heute 60 bis 100 Jahre alt, kommen hier 121 zu Wort. 165 thematisch in sich abgerundete Textausschnitte aus 109 mehrstündigen Gesprächen, die zwischen 1989 und 1994 in Israel geführt wurden, dokumentieren beeindruckend die hohe, an den Normen der Schriftsprache orientierte Sprachkultur des Bildungsbürgertums der zwanziger Jahre. Gleichzeitig entstand damit eine Chronik über das deutsche Judentum vor und nach 1933, die Emigration und den Neuanfang in Palästina bis zu den israelischen Problemen der Gegenwart, die auch für Historiker und den Unterrichtsgebrauch Quellenmaterial von grö ter Lebendigkeit bietet. Die Texte werden in vier chronologisch und thematisch geordneten Kapiteln präsentiert; die Abfolge der 38 ausgewählten Proben auf der beigegebenen CD folgt demselben Prinzip. Für die Transkription wurde zur besseren Lesbarkeit die literarische Umschrift gewählt, jedoch im Hinblick auf syntaktisch-stilistische und gesprächsanalytische Analysen, die in einem zweiten Band folgen werden, in Partiturschreibung, u.a. mit genauer Kennzeichnung gleichzeitigen Sprechens.
