El Tratado de las supersticiones y costumbres gentílicas que hoy viven entre los indios naturales de esta Nueva España contiene los apuntes de un viaje impresionante por el norte de México en el siglo XVI, en el que Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón, hermano del dramaturgo Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, se acerca a las costumbres nativas.
Para escribir su libro, Alarcón recorrió el golfo de California y alcanzó el río Colorado. Tuvo contacto con los aborígenes de la zona y compiló abundante información sobre sus prácticas y costumbres guerreras, religiosas e incluso sexuales que aparecieron en el Tratado, publicado en 1629.
La finalidad del tratado era más bien combatir como fiel guardián de la fe y la moral católica, más que catalogar y conocer las costumbres, idolatrías y supersticiones que se practicaban en el territorio de la Nueva España y que subsistían al margen de la obra evangelizadora de los monjes.
Mi intento con esta obra, no es hacer una exquisita pesquisa de las costumbres de los naturales desta Tierra, que requería una obra muy larga y muchas divisiones: y no sé para que fuese hoy provechoso semejante trabajo. Solo pretendo abrir senda a los ministros de los indios, para que entrambos fueros puedan fácilmente venir en conocimiento desta corruptela para que así puedan mejor tratar de su corrección si no del remedio.
Hernando Ruiz de Alarcon (1581-1639), Mexico. El abuelo de Hernando tuvo problemas con el Santo Oficio por ser judio converso y por haber convivido con una joven india. Se dice que el proceso inquisitorial fue abortado debido a la intervencion de Hernan Cazalla. El sentimiento de pertenecer a una familia de herejes aparece en una denuncia contra Gaspar Ruiz de Alarcon (hermano de Hernando y del dramaturgo Pedro Ruiz de Alarcon). Asimismo el mismo Hernando Ruiz de Alarcon presento una denuncia ante el Tribunal del Santo Oficio, contra aquellos que con granos de maiz, o mediante la ingestion de las semillas de la planta llamada ololiuqui, se entregan a la adivinacion en una obsesion, propia de la epoca, de lavar su sangre judia luchando contra las supersticiones gentilicas. Para escribir su libro, Alarcon recorrio el golfo de California y alcanzo el rio Colorado. Tuvo contacto con los aborigenes de la zona y compilo abundante informacion sobre sus practicas y costumbres guerreras, religiosas e incluso sexuales que aparecieron en el Tratado de las costumbres gentilicas, publicado en 1629.
