Es ist der gro e Traum des Hamburger Antiquitäten-Händlers Peter Feiler. Er möchte allein um die Welt segeln. Durch raffinierte Betrügereien verschafft er sich einen hölzernen Segelkutter, die Mary Ann, und segelt über Elbe, Nordsee und Englischen Kanal in die Biscaya. Dort gerät er in einen schweren Sturm. Der Kutter schlägt voll Wasser, und Feiler erreicht nur mit knapper Not den rettenden Hafen von St. Malo in Frankreich. Für die Atlantik-Überqerung nimmt er auf Gran Canaria die holländische Segel-Tramperin Adje mit. Während einer ihrer Nachtwachen verschwindet sie spurlos von Bord. Bei Feilers Ankunft auf Martinique verschweigt er den Vorfall aus Angst vor weiteren Nachforschungen durch die Polizei, die ihm möglicherweise einen Mord unterstellen würde. Dem deutschen Einhandsegler Hannes Oppermann, den er auf Martinique trifft, erzählt er jedoch die Geschichte. Was Feiler nicht ahnt: Oppermann ist Drogen-Kurier der venezulanischen Drogen-Mafia. Mit dem Wissen um Adjes Tod erpresst er Feiler, der so ebenfalls in die Fänge der Drogenmafia gerät und gezwungen wird, Kokain von der Isla Margarita aus nach Nordamerika zu segeln. Bei einem tropischen Wirbelsturm strandet Feilers Segelkutter in der Bucht von Martinique und sinkt. Feilers reiche amerikanische Freundin Anne Coleman beschafft ihm gegen ein Eheversprechen eine neue, grö ere Yacht, die Traumtänzer getauft wird. Dennoch gerät Feiler in Geldnot und segelt Kokain auf eigene Rechnung nach Amerika, was der Mafia nicht verborgen bleibt. Nach seiner Rückkehr zur Karibikinsel Bequia, die inzwischen zu seiner zweiten Heimat geworden ist, findet man ihn eines Morgens erhängt am Mast seiner Yacht. War es Mord oder Selbstmord?

Harald Schwarzlose segelte von Kindesbeinen an und machte frühzeitig sein Hobby zum Beruf. 1967 kam er als Wassersport-Journalist zur SegelzeitschriftYACHT, die er lange Jahre als Chefredakteur und Herausgeber leitete. Nebenbei schrieb er etliche Fachbücher über den Segelsport, die in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt wurden. 1995 erhielt er den Förderpreis der Kreuzer-Abteilung des Deutschen Seglerverbandes für das beste Segelsportbuch des Jahres: Kleine Kreuzer. 1981 segelte er auf einer 9-m-Yacht zusammen mit drei Freunden über den Atlantik und bereiste anschließend die Schauplätze in der Karibik, die diesem Buch zugrunde liegen. 1998 befuhr er mit einer Yacht den Intracoastel Waterway, der längsten Binnenwasserstraße der Welt an der Ostküste Nordamerikas, wo er weitere Recherchen für den vorliegenden Roman durchführte.
