Trumpets and Shawms is a historical fiction novel written by Henry Hanby Hay and published in 1896. The book is set in the 16th century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and follows the story of a young man named Robin Dale, who dreams of becoming a musician in the royal court. Robin is a skilled player of the shawm, a type of wind instrument popular in medieval and Renaissance music, but he faces many obstacles on his journey to success.The novel is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different stage of Robin's life. In the first part, Robin leaves his small town and travels to London to pursue his musical ambitions. He meets a group of fellow musicians and becomes involved in the courtly intrigues of the time, including a plot to overthrow the queen. In the second part, Robin falls in love with a noblewoman named Lady Margaret, but their relationship is threatened by her father's disapproval and the political turmoil of the era. In the final part, Robin achieves his dream of playing for the queen, but he must navigate the dangerous waters of court politics and deal with the consequences of his past actions.Throughout the novel, Hay vividly portrays the sights, sounds, and customs of Elizabethan England, from the bustling streets of London to the grandeur of the royal court. He also explores themes of love, loyalty, and ambition, as well as the role of music in society.
