Twenty-One Laboratory Sessions in Microbiology is a well organized laboratory manual for the student and the instructor. The instructor can select any number of completed laboratory exercises and use them the to assign an objective grade for the student's completed laboratory work. It is an understandable introductory laboratory manual for the beginning microbiology student. It is clear, concise and easy to read. It is abbreviated, but also comprehensive. It provides basic information needed to reinforce information provided in any introductory microbiology textbook. The manual will clarify lecture information presented in class. Twenty-One Laboratory Sessions in Microbiology contains instructional exercises that are present in most microbiology laboratory manuals. However, most manuals present many more exercises than can be completed in one semester. Most of the work in this book can be completed in a ten-week course. After completing the exercises in this manual, the student will learn: - what science is - the scientific method - how and why we study microbiology - the major topics presented in a microbiology course. Another purpose of this manual is to fill in "gaps" in the knowledge base of students who have been out of school for some time. Helpful study "tips" are included too. The author actively engages the student in the learning process through relevant activities. Simple activities are built upon to in order understand complex activities.

Michael is an experienced biology and physical science teacher and instructor with extensive experience in public and private secondary schools and colleges in New York State. As a college instructor, he began as an adjunct lecturer teaching microbiology, general biology, anatomy and physiology and quickly attained the rank of assistant professor at several colleges with responsibility for teaching, organizing curricula, setting up microbiology laboratories and planning microbiology laboratory courses. Throughout his teaching career, Michael has had the privilege of attending lectures, research seminars and journal clubs on a variety of research topics at The Rockefeller University in New York City. Michael participated in research projects at the same institution for over 20 years. He has assisted on and coauthored several peer-reviewed papers. Michael is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the American Society for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Education Association (NEA). He has also been elected to membership in two honorary scientific societies: the New York Academy of Science and the Rockefeller University Chapter of Sigma Xi, a worldwide honorary society for research scientists. Michael's hobbies include science writing, garden design, architectural woodworking and auto mechanics. He also has been a life-long stamp collector and enjoys repair and collecting of vintage toy electric trains.
