Es existieren zwar einige Ansätze zur Kategorisierung von Sportstätten, grö tenteils innerhalb von Sportstättenentwicklungsplänen, jedoch sind diese nur bedingt einheitlich. Abgesehen von Sportstättenentwicklungsplänen gibt es andere wissenschaftliche Publikationen, die Kategorisierungsansätze enthalten, wobei diese meist nicht primär das Thema der Publikation sind, sondern nur als Mittel zum Zweck, d.h. zur Erläuterung bestimmter Sachverhalte, dienen. Im Rahmen dieses Buches sollen zuerst einmal die hauptsächlich verwendeten Ansätze erläutert und die bekanntesten und am häufigsten auftretenden Arten von Sportstätten begrifflich abgegrenzt werden. Zusätzlich wird noch ein Ansatz präsentiert, den der Autor mit Hilfe bestimmter Begriffsbestimmungen und unter Zuhilfenahme von, in der Literatur nur sporadisch auftauchenden, Aspekten selber generiert hat. Im nächsten Schritt wird vom Autor eine kombinierte Lösung angeboten, die auf den Haupterkenntnissen der anderen Ansätze basiert. Diese Lösung ist für Sportwissenschaftler sowie für Sportfunktionäre, -beauftragte, -interessierte usw. eine Möglichkeit um eine klare und nachvollziehbare Kategorisierung von Sportstätten durchzuführen.
