Ende der achtziger Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts, als das Bedürfnis der sich rasch entwickelnden Industrie nach überall leicht verfügbarer Triebkraft es notwendig machte, elektrische Energie auf weitere Entfernungen zu übertragen, trat hier in Europa der Wechselstrom zum ersten Mal dem bis dahin fast souverän herrschenden Gleichstrome als gefähr- licher Konkurrent an die Seite. Es kam bei den ersten Wechselstromanlagen meist darauf an, die so übertragene elektrische Arbeit in mechanische umzusetzen und es lag somit nahe, bei denselben mehrphasige Systeme, besonders Drehstrom zu verwenden, denn man batte in dem damals vor kurzem von ]'erraris und anderen fast gleichzeitig erfundenen mebrpbasigen Induktionsmotor eine Triebmaschine, die für den in Frage kommenden stationären Betrieb in hohem Grade geeignet war, und die sich durch Einfachheit der Herstellung und der Handhabung sowie durch Unempfindlichkeit gegen äu ere Einflüsse wie Staub, Feuchtigkeit u. s. w. sogar dem Gleichstrommotor bedeutend überlegen zeigte. Wenn man noch dazu berücksichtigt, da der Mehrphasenmotor einen hohen Wirkungsgrad und gro e Überlastungsfähigkeit besa und ohne Schwierigkeit eine Regulierung des Drehmomentes (mittels Widerstände im Ankerstromkreis) zulie , ist es nicht zu verwundern, da er als der "Wechselstrommotor der Zu- kunft" betrachtet wurde, und da folglich das besondere Inter- esse der elektrotechnischen Fachwelt mehr auf seine Vervoll- kommnung als auf die Schaffung anderer Motore gerichtet wurde. v.
