In kritischer Anlehnung an Hegel, Freud, und Heidegger entwickelte Sartre eine existentialistische Phänomenologie, die ontologisch und anthropologisch ausdifferenziert wurde. In dem Kapitel "Der Blick" aus Sartres "Das Sein und das Nichts" gibt er eine mögliche Antwort auf die Frage, weshalb die Anderen für uns zur Hölle werden können: Es sind die Blicke der Anderen, die uns in eine Höllensituation bringen können. Warum? Die Ursache dafür sieht Sartre in mehreren Punkten. An erster Stelle das menschliche Schamgefühl und die scheinbar sinnlose Existenz aller Dinge in der Welt, was Sartre bereits 1935 in seinem Roman "Der Ekel" geschildert hatte. Der Blick des Menschen ist eine objektive Sichtweise. Alles was wir in unserer Umwelt wahrnehmen, begreifen wir zunächst als Objekt, so auch die anderen Menschen. Unser Schamgefühl bezeichnet Sartre als das begreifen dessen, das man von Anderen gesehen wird und so zum Objekt des Betrachters gemacht wird. Das Höllische daran ist nun, laut Sartre, dass wir nicht imstande sind den uns Betrachtenden unsere Subjektheit, unser eigenes Wesen zu vermitteln. "Insofern bilden die andren zunächst eine Hölle, weil sie uns dazu verdammen, etwas zu sein, was wir nicht sind, und uns damit unserer Freiheit berauben, uns zu dem zu machen, was wir wirklich sind." Das bedeutet, dass der Betrachter nicht in der Lage ist unser inneres Wesen zu erfassen. Der erste Eindruck, bleibt immer ein äu erlicher, den man durch Gestik, Mimik und Aussagen des Gegenübers erfährt. So verhält es sich auch mit den Figuren des Dramas "Geschlossene Gesellschaft". Drei Charaktere treffen hier aufeinander, von denen je einer den Blicken und Meinungen der zwei Anderen ausgesetzt ist und bleibt.
