Jeder von uns hat eine Basis, eine Grundlage für sein Bibelverständnis. Jeder benutzt ein gewisses hermeneutisches Prinzip. Manchmal offenbart sich dieses Prinzip nicht eindeutig. Aber bei der Auslegung lenkt es immer unser Denken. Dies Prinzip legt auch die Form und die Art unserer Weitergabe der biblischen Botschaft fest. In dieser Arbeit wird das Kreuz Jesu als das hermeneutische Prinzip, als die Grundlage fürs Verständnis, für die Auslegung und Weitergabe der biblischen Botschaft darzustellen versucht. Diese Darstellung beansprucht nicht eine fertige Hermeneutik zu liefern. Sie setzt sich zum Ziel einen kurzen Überblick über die Bedeutung des Kreuzes für das Verständnis der biblischen Botschaft zu geben. Das Christentum ist von Anfang an fest an das Symbol der römischen Hinrichtung gebunden. Das Kreuz ist zu einer Art Visitenkarte des Glaubens an Christus geworden. Das Kreuz unterscheidet die christliche Religion von den anderen Religionen und positioniert sich auch innerhalb des Christentums unterschiedlich. Deswegen ist es nicht verkehrt, den christlichen Glauben angesichts dieses Kreuzes immer neu zu durchdenken und ihn immer neu darauf zu orientieren. In der Arbeit wird zuerst ein Einblick in "die Geschichte" des Verständnisses des Kreuzes binnen der christlichen Kirche gewährt. Dann wird die Aufmerksamkeit auf "den Vater" der Kreuzestheologie, nämlich Martin Luther gelenkt, der als einer der ersten Theologen das Kreuz als allgemeines hermeneutisches Prinzip verstanden hat.
