Die Transformation der Antike ist auf vielf�ltige Weise mit dem Vorgang der �bersetzung verkn�pft. Handgreiflich wird der Zusammenhang von �bersetzung und Transformation bei textbasierten Disziplinen, die von �bersetzungen antiker Texten abh�ngig sind und bei denen wesentliche Neuerungen erst durch solche �bersetzungen initiiert werden. Allgemein ist �bersetzung auf zweifache Weise mit der Transformation der Antike verkn�pft: Erstens stellen �bersetzungen einzelner Werke fest umrissene Transformationsleistungen dar, die sich als exemplarischer Untersuchungsgegenstand anbieten, um allgemeine Modi und Gesetzm� igkeiten f�r die Transformation der Antike zu untersuchen. Zweitens stellen �bersetzungen die Grundlage und oftmals auch den Ausl�ser f�r konkrete Transformationsprozesse dar, so dass die Analyse der betreffenden Transformationen nur in Abh�ngigkeit von den relevanten �bersetzungen erfolgen kann.

Zu beachten ist nun, dass der �bersetzungsbegriff einerseits nicht auf Text-zu-Text-�bersetzungen verengt und andererseits nicht so erweitert wird, dass er mit allen Transformations- und Transfervorg�ngen gleichbedeutend wird. Die Untersuchung von �bersetzungen antiker Texte als spezifischer Transformationen antiker Wissenssysteme muss daher in wesentlichen Hinsichten erg�nzt werden. So zeigt das Gedankenexperiment der sogenannten 'radikalen �bersetzung', dass die Probleme der Text-zu-Text-�bersetzung vor dem Hintergrund einer umfassenderen Problematik zu sehen sind, die durch die Ausweitung des �bersetzungsbegriffs auf das Verstehen als �bersetzung zwischen Begriffssystemen verst�ndlich wird.
