O objetivo deste estudo era determinar se existia uma diferença entre os estilos de lançamento com o braço em cima (OA) e com o braço lateral (SA) em jogadores de softbol. O tempo de movimento (do contacto com a bola até ao lançamento), o tempo de voo (do lançamento até ao contacto com o alvo) e o tempo total (do contacto com a bola até ao contacto com o alvo) foram medidos em 31 jogadoras de softbol destras da Divisão I. Cada participante completou 10 ensaios de lançamento e de campo (5 SA e 5 OA) numa "situação de jogo". Os resultados mostraram que o tempo de movimento do SA é mais rápido do que o tempo de movimento do OA, o tempo de voo do SA é mais lento do que o tempo de voo do OA e o tempo total do SA é mais rápido do que o tempo total do OA, demonstrando que o estilo de lançamento do SA é mais rápido. A mecânica comum do SA foi então investigada, examinando três grupos de lançamentos SA, lançamentos SA rápidos, moderados e lentos. Os resultados indicam uma diferença significativa entre os grupos de lançamentos rápidos, moderados e lentos com SA em áreas de tempo de movimento, tempo de voo e mecânicas específicas, como a fase de arranque, a fase de passada e a inclinação do tronco no lançamento da bola. Com estes resultados, podem ser feitas recomendações para melhorar e tornar o lançamento SA numa técnica de lançamento mais eficiente.
