Zur Jahrtausendwende gehörte Namibia zu den Ländern, die mit erheblichen Problemen hinsichtlich der Nahrungsmittelversorgung ihrer Bevölkerung zu kämpften hatten. Landknappheit und mangelnde Ernährungssicherheit beruht nicht allein auf dem enormen Bevölkerungswachstum, sondern entspringt hauptsächlich dem Rückgang der Flächenproduktivität als Folge zahlreicher Degradationsprozesse. Das Ausma der weltweiten Verbreitung von Degradierungs- und Desertifikationsschäden betraf bereits 1995 circa "ein Sechstel der Weltbevölkerung und ein Viertel der gesamten Landoberfläche der Erde" (HORNETZ & JÄTZOLD 2003: 129), wobei davon ausgegangen werden muss, dass circa 73% aller Flächen weltweit unter extensiver Weidenutzung als degradiert bezeichnet werden können (Hornetz & Jätzold 2003: 129). Bodenerosion ist bereits in den 1930er Jahren als "Gei el Afrikas" (JÜRGENS & BÄHR 2002: 289) bezeichnet worden und bildet bis in die Gegenwart hinein ein Problem enormen Ausma es. Dieser Befund führt sehr deutlich vor Augen, dass Umweltdegradation eine Thematik von bedeutender sozialer sowie geographischer Relevanz darstellt, da Menschen in Folge der Degradation ihre Existenzgrundlage verlieren. Die Prozesse und Folgen von Landdegradation zählen deshalb zu den wichtigsten geographischen Problemfeldern der Gegenwart.Anhand dieser Arbeit sollen daher die Ursachen von Degradation und deren langfristige Folgen am Beispiel von Namibia näher betrachtet werden.
