Residente en Honolulu por más de treinta y cinco años donde ejerció la docencia en la Universidad de Hawai y adquirió su propio bronceado, esta edición definitiva de Un bronceado hawaiano, de Matías Montes Huidobro, comprende cambios y omisiones con respecto a la primera (Aduana Vieja, 2012). Aunque sigue los pasos de la versión original, adquiere una nueva textura que la transforma y enriquece. Como ha señalado el profesor Jorge Febles, de la Universidad del Norte de la Florida, "no sorprende del todo que el escritor experimente con la ficción detectivesca corte hard-boiled por su inherente ambigüedad ideológica, desproporcionado erotismo, sustrato crítico e inclinación tipificadora. Tampoco asombra el subtítulo aclaratorio impuesto al libro: Un film noir. A la postre, el autor se ha propuesto idear una historia en prosa iluminada no tanto por Raymond Chandler, James Cain, Dashiel Hammett, Agatha Christe, Earl Derr Biggers y otros a quienes se alude directa o indirectamente en la novela, sino más bien en las películas inspiradas en estos textos. De este modo, la novela impele a cotejar lo leído con imágenes fílmicas ya bien conocidas, ya bien intuidas, para así descifrar no tanto la intriga misma como el sustrato imaginativo de la que emana. Esto explica el carácter fílmico de esta edición que enriquece la producción narrativa de Montes Huidobro desde Desterrados al fuego (Fondo de Cultura Económica, México, 1973), única mención del concurso "Primera Novela" que le fuera otorgada por Juan Rulfo, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Goytisolo, Ramón Xirau y José Miguel Oviedo (un respaldo crítico en sí mismo), hasta recibir el Premio Café Gijón de 1997 por Esa fuente de dolor. En el 2012 presentó la primera edición de Un bronceado hawaiano durante las jornadas de la Semana Negra en Gijón, y la que ahora publicamos, donde cualquier parecido con persona viva o muerta es pura coincidencia, confirma su vigencia.
