On Homecoming Sunday at Abingdon Trinity Church, the congregation witnesses an event that would send shock waves back in time through this historic, quiet, beautiful town tucked just inside Virginia, on the border of East Tennessee. Writer Janet Allbritton is in town visiting her mother when she witnesses the preacher's death in the church fellowship hall. Janet is at a crossroads in her life and career and has left her home in a suburb of Washington, D.C., to give herself physical and psychological distance in her quest. She teams with writer Jefferson Rife, editor of the local newspaper, to explore the history of the region and publish articles in a column titled Local Legends. Together, Janet and Jeff investigate the preacher's life and death, and uncover his and other's secrets in a compelling search for truth.

Jean McMillen is the author of many scholarly monographs, reports, papers and articles. Her short story appears in Chesapeake Crimes 1, an anthology by members of the Chesapeake Chapter of Sisters in Crime, an advocacy organization for women mystery writers. She is a native of Grundy, Virginia, near Abingdon. She left the region for Washington, D.C., in the 1960s to do good work on a larger scale as a substance abuse professional and writer, but her heart will always be with the wonderful community in southwest Virginia. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and Charlottesville, Virginia.
