In today’s world, social inequalities are diverse, intricate, and are magnified by different kinds of discrimination. Inequalities in education, employment, and housing have renewed the interest in the role of iscrimination as various forms still exist and continue to shape our worlds in fundamental ways. Even though caste prejudice and discrimination are not as overt and widespread today, discrimination is not easily identifiable, posing problems for conceptualization. Unequal Worlds specifically sets out to explore contemporary manifestations of discrimination that persist in our society through institutions, and through norms and practices that define the terms of continued exclusion of certain social groups. Institutional rules and social interactions make some people more vulnerable to domination and exploitation, and they raise fundamental questions of justice today. The book argues against tendencies to assume an unquestioned similarity of discriminations that fail to address the structural level at which inequalities are promoted. The conceptual vocabulary of intersectionality allows us to understand the persistence of discrimination across multiple domains.
