Weltkulturerbestätten und stellt sie damit unter einen besonderen Schutz. Auch in Deutschland wurden durch die UNESCO 30 Weltkulturerbestätten und eine Weltnaturerbestätte ausgezeichnet. Da die vorliegende Arbeit den Titel "UNESCO - Weltnaturerbestätten in Deutschland - Typisierung und Vermarktung" trägt, wird nach einer Beschreibung der UNESCO - die Aufbau, Arbeitsbereiche und Vorgehensweise umfasst - das Hauptaugenmerk auf die einzige, von der UNESCO als solche ausgezeichnete und geschützte Weltnaturerbestätte Deutschlands gelegt: Die Fossilienlagerstätte Grube Messel. In einem ersten Kapitel wird daher zunächst eine detaillierte Darstellung der in der Fachliteratur bis vor 5 Jahren noch umstrittenen Genese der Lagerstätte erfolgen. Zudem wird eine ausführliche Betrachtung ihres Aufbaus und der in ihr gelagerten Ölschiefer durchgeführt, bevor in einem letzten Schritt auf die Fossilien der Lagerstätte eingegangen werden wird, welche für die weltweite Bekanntheit der Grube Messel verantwortlich sind. In den beiden folgenden Kapiteln werden zwei von der UNESCO zwar nicht zu Weltnaturerbestätten, aber zu Weltkulturerbestätten ernannte Landschaften kurz vorgestellt: die Kulturlandschaft des Oberen Mittelrheintals und die Elbtalweitung bei Dresden. Auch ohne besondere Auszeichnung handelt es sich bei diesen Stätten zweifellos um schützenswerte Naturlandschaften, welche aus eben diesem Grund in der vorliegenden Arbeit unter den die Genese betreffenden und morphologischen Aspekten kurz betrachtet werden sollen.
