Despite centuries of scrutiny and a range of proposed candidates, the Epistle to the Hebrews remains anonymous. Paul was long credited for canonical convenience, yet internal evidence contradicts his authorship on several fronts. Barnabas attracted early support, but the theory lacks concrete evidence and clashes with textual indicators. Apollos is often seen as the most plausible contender-educated, Alexandrian, and associated with Paul-but this appealing hypothesis remains unsupported by external sources. The suggestion of Priscilla (and Aquila) adds the intriguing possibility of a female author concealing her identity; however, linguistic analysis and historical silence make this scenario unlikely. Clement of Rome and Luke have been proposed based on traditional and stylistic grounds, yet neither withstands comprehensive scrutiny.
Modern Western scholarship has largely accepted Origen's conclusion: the author's identity is unknown. What is clear is that the writer was a prominent, exceptionally learned Jew-likely a respected rabbi-who possessed deep theological insight, mastery of the Hebrew Scriptures, and ties to Paul's circle, yet was not an apostle. He wrote with pastoral urgency, encouraging a Jewish audience not to abandon Christ amid persecution, and appears to have been personally known to them.

The limitations of historic theories invite fresh consideration of overlooked figures-a rabbi fluent in Jewish law, Scripture, and priestly customs; a sage trained in advanced rhetoric; a leader requiring anonymity for personal protection; someone capable of bridging Judaism and emerging Christianity with the theological depth evident throughout Hebrews.

So, who then is the true author who penned the Epistle to the Hebrews?
