About The Book

These are lonely pictures. But they are not empty or lifeless. There is someone in them, or someone was there, or someone will return. These liminal spaces are what we miss from our cars, hurtling toward our destinations. These unmoments in time are what we miss in our urgent haste. What you see in these images are the places we call nowhere. These people in them are those we call nobody. It takes work to witness what we've trained ourselves to ignore. Chick does that work, and brings back proof that all we have decided doesn't matter, matters most of all.

Los Angeles is a dichotomy of the dreams and disillusionments of the millions of people who answer its siren call. Tempting us to come to it with its magical promises of a fantastic life. "Unseen" is an exhibition that peels back the shiny plastic coverings of everything we assume about this city. This collection of photographs aims to capture the moments that escape our hurried glances and instead focuses on the poignance found in the overlooked, the unconsidered, and the forgotten.

Defying conventional categorization, these photographs blend documentary realism and street photography with an intangible, poetic, and painterly quality. From friendless silhouettes of solitary figures to the hushed loneliness of abandoned buildings, these pictures speak to a sense of place and belonging-or the lack thereof- finding meaning in the ordinary and acknowledging the invisible threads of commonality that connect us all.

As you immerse yourself in the pictures, I welcome you to discover a Los Angeles that few people see and even fewer acknowledge. A reminder that within the roar and chaos of LA life exists a quiet and overlooked world longing to be witnessed.

McClure, T. Chick: - T. Chick McClure is an intersex photographer in Los Angeles who has crafted a life and career that reflects resilience, creativity, and self-discovery. His pictures and words have been published, podcasted, streamed, televised, and filmed. He was a member of The Groundlings Theatre Sunday Company, and his animation work contributed to a VMA and Latin Grammy Award for Best Animated Music Video. His photographs and writing have been featured in PAPER Magazine, NPR, and other outlets.
