Das vorliegende Buch - Unternehmen UNIX@ - wurde wahrend der letzten drei Jahre geschrieben, zu einer Zeit, als ich bei Sun Microsystems arbeitete. Da die Firma Sun ausschlief5lich im UNIX-Markt tatig ist, war ich genotigt, mich sowohl tiber die technologischen als auch tiber die kommerziellen Aspekte von UNIX umfassend zu informieren. Bei diesem Lernproze15 wurde mir bewu15t, da15 die meisten UNIX-Informations quell en ausgesprochen technischer Natur waren und sich insbesondere an technisch orientierte Endverbraucher und Software-Entwickler richte ten. Es erschien mir einleuchtend, da15 ein Bedarf an einer tiefgehenden, mehr im kommerziellen Bereich angesiedelten Analyse bestand. Meine berufliche Laufbahn in der EDV begann Anfang der 70er Jahre, zu einer Zeit, als der Einsatz von Gro15rechnern die Regel und Timesha ring noch Neuland war. Wahrend der folgenden 20 Jahre, als sich meine berufliche Laufbahn von der Systementwicklung und -programmierung entfernte und dem Marketing und der kommerziellen Seite zuwandte, in teressierte ich mich immer mehr daftir, wie sich neue Technologien auf Probleme im geschaftlichen Bereich nutzbringend anwenden lassen. Ich erkannte, da15 auf Grund der Verschiebung innerhalb der Industrie hin zu Offenen Systemen die Lage ftir UNIX au15erst gtinstig war - eine Si tuation, die nicht nur Programmierern und Technikern zugute kommen wtirde, sondern auch System-Managern, Einkaufern und ftihrenden Ent scheidungstragern, aber auch dem Marketing, dem Vertrieb und den Spezialisten im Support."
