Reibung und VerschleiB ftihren in den verschiedensten Berei- chen der Technik zu erheblichen Materialverlusten, hauptsach- lich bei der Metall-Metall und der Metall-Mineral-Bertihrung. Der dadurch entstehende betrachtliche Schaden nimmt aufgrund hoherer Produktivitat der eingesetzten Maschinen, des Arbei- tens im Verbundsystem sowie Jestiegener Rohstoffpreise und Recycling standig zu. Ein wesentlicher Kostenfaktor ist wei- terhin die Steigerung der durch diese Schaden entstehenden Folgekosten. Daher sind aIle MaBnahrnen, die den VerschleiB herabsetzen, sowohl unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Rohstoffeinsparung als auch im Hinblick auf eine Reduzierung der durch VerschleiB- vorgange verursachten Verluste von volkswirtschaftlichem In- teresse. Nach Schatzungen betragen diese Verluste in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland mehr als 10 Mrd. DM/Jahr, so daB der Entwicklung verschleiBfester Werkstoffe in Zukunft ent- scheidende Bedeutung zukommt. Dabei kann man sich den Um- stand zunutze machen, daB VerschleiBbeanspruchungen haupt- sachlich in den Oberflachenbereichen eines Bauteiles wirk- sam sind. Es ist deshalb technisch sinnvoll, vor allem je- doch wirtschaftlich, MaBnahrnen zur VerschleiBminderung auf die Oberflachenzone zu konzentrieren. VerschleiBschutzschichten, die durch Eindiffusion von Atomen eines oder mehrerer Elemente in die Oberflachenbereiche von Werkstticken gebildet werden, haben sich bereits in vielen Bereichen der Praxis zur Losung von VerschleiBproblemen be- wahrt. Bekannt und vielfach genutzt sind vor allem das Auf- kohlen mit anschlieBendem Harten, das Nitrieren und zuneh- mend auch das Borieren /1/. Von groBer Bedeutung sind eben- falls Hartstoffschichten, die nach dem CVD-Verfahren aufge- bracht werden /2/.
