Born into slavery, he rose to become the founder of the Tuskegee Institute, promoting education and economic self-sufficiency for African Americans. His philosophy of gradual progress and racial uplift made him a central figure in post-Civil War America. His autobiography, Up from Slavery, remains one of the most significant works in American history.
