Upon that Mountain is the first autobiography of the mountaineer and explorer Eric Shipton. In it, he describes all his pre-war climbing, including his Everest bids of the 1930s, and his second Karakoram survey in 1939, when he returned to Snow Lake to complete the mapping of the ranges flanking the Hispar and Choktoi glacier systems around the Ogre.

Crossing great swathes of the Himalaya, the book, like so many of Shipton's works, is both entertaining and an important addition to the mountain literature genre. It captures an important period in mountaineering history - that just before the Second World War - an ends on an elegiac note as Shipton describes his last evening at the starkly beautiful snow lake, before he returns to a 'civilisation' about to embark on a cataclysmic war.

Perrin, Jim: - Jim Perrin is a renowned rock climber and author. As well as pioneering new routes on the Derbyshire gritstone outcrops, North Wales and Pembrokeshire's sea cliffs, he also has a number of first ascents and solo climbs to his name. He has published sixteen books, of which Menlove, his biography of John Menlove Edwards, and The Villain, a biography of Don Whillans co-written with Andy Cave, won the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature. The latter title also won Mountaineering History Prize at Banff Mountain Book Festival, and the Mountaineering Literature Prize for his book The Climbing Essays. His writing has established his status as one of Britain's most prominent mountain literature authors.

Shipton, Eric: - "Eric Shipton (1907-1977) was one of the great mountain explorers of the 20th century, often known for his infamous climbing partnership with H.W. 'Bill' Tilman. He climbed extensively in the Alps in the 1920s, put up new routes on Mount Kenya in 1921, and in 1931, made the first ascent of Kamet with Frank Smythe - the highest peak climbed at that time. Shipton was involved with most of the Everest expeditions in the 1930s, reaching a high point of 28,000 feet in 1933. He went on to lead the 1951 expedition, which was the first to approach Everest from the north (Nepali) side through the Khumbu ice fall, and on which Edmund Hillary first set foot on the mountain."
