Neben der Kompliziertheit der Vorgange und der Schwierigkeit des Experimentierens bei Tempera- turen um 1500 0 sind hierfiir die umfangreichen Erfahrungen verant- wortlich, welche die Menschheit seit den ersten Anfangen der Zivilisation iiber die Eigenschaften und die Verwendung des Feuers gesammelt hat, so daB gute empirische Losungen fiir viele technische Aufgaben zur Ver- fiigung stehen. Hinzu kommt, daB Dampfkessel, IndustrieOfen und hausliche Feuerstatten unabhangig voneinander entwickelt wurden, ganz zu schweigen von Raketen, Gasturbinen und Kolbenmotoren. Indessen miissen alle diese Fachrichtungen auf den gleichen Grund- lagen aufbauen, alle Flammen beruhen auf einem Zusammenwirken von Reaktionen mit Austauschvorgangen von Stoff, Warme und Impuls. Ohne Einsicht in den Ausbreitungsvorgang einer Flammenfront kann man den Stabilisierungsmechanismus einer Diffusionsflamme nicht ver- stehen. In diesem Buch habe ich versucht, die gemeinsamen Grundlagen aller Verbrennungsvorgange zu beschreiben und ihre Anwendung auf Feue- rungen, d. h. Warmetauscher mit Verbrennung, in einer Form zu zeigen, die den Bediirfnissen des Ingenieurs entspricht. Verbrennungsanlagen, die der direkten Erzeugung mechanischer Energie dienen, werden nur soweit erwahnt, als die hier gegebenen Grundlagen dies zwanglos zulassen.
