In unserem Alltag kommen wir tagtäglich mit Erkenntnissen aus der Wissenschaft in Berührung. Sei es im Internet, wo wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zusammengetragen worden sind, wenn man sich beispielsweise über neue aktuelle Erkenntnisse der Coronapandemie informieren will oder ein Gesundheitsinstitut anruft, um mögliche Entwicklungen der Pandemieausbreitung in der Stadt Hamburg erfragen möchte. In der empirischen Forschung differenziert man zwischen zwei Methoden, der qualitativen und der quantitativen Forschungsmethodik. Ziel eines jeden Forschungsprozesses ist, mithilfe einer Forschungsfrage, ein Ergebnis zu erlangen. Bei der Durchführung einer Studie, um eine Forschungsfrage zu klären, gibt es demnach zwei verschiedene Ansätze, um diese zu lösen. Die beiden erwähnten Forschungsmethoden unterscheiden sich in einigen Merkmalen, sind aber dennoch nicht grundsätzlich gegensätzlich anzusehen, denn sie kennzeichnen sich au erdem durch übergreifende Gemeinsamkeiten. Bei der Untersuchung einer Forschungsfrage kann der Forscher grundsätzlich wählen, welche Methode angewandt wird. Jedoch kann man bereits zu Anfang vorwegnehmen, dass die Wahl der Methode abhängig ist von der wissenschaftlichen Fragestellung, den persönlichen Erkenntnissen aus der Vergangenheit des Forschers und von den Lesern der wissenschaftlichen Ausarbeitung. Das Sprichwort "Viele Wege führen zum Ziel" symbolisiert die Anwendbarkeit der beiden empirischen Methoden. Der Forscher hat die Möglichkeit aus einem Auswahlspektrum von mehreren Werkzeugen sich das perfekte auszuwählen, umso den passenden Forschungsweg zu finden.
