Excerpt from Vergleichende Grammatik der Slavischen Sprachen, Vol. 2: Stammbildungslehre

I. Die form jener worter, welche von wurzeln oder primären verben stammen, wird wie in allen indoeuropc'iischen sprachen so auch im slavischen wesentlich durch den vocal bestimmt: boj flagellum für boj aus b'1' ferire; kov-'l quod cuditur aus kü cudere; vés-1. Sta tera aus vis pendére; kvas-1. Fermentum aus küs acescere; eben so poiin - a metere iterativ von isn metere durativ. Aus dem. Angeführten erhellt, dass auch der umstand eine rolle spielt, ob der vocal im aus oder im inlaute steht. Aus diesem grunde habe ich alle wurzeln und primären verba in zwei kategorien geteilt, in die kategorie der vocalisch und in die der consonantisch auslautenden themen. Jede lcategorie zerfallt nach dem. Vocal in mehrere classen, die durch die hier auf geführten verbalthemen repraesentiert werden: I. 1. Da.. 2. Pi. 3. Du. 4. St]. 5. Br. 6. Dé. 7. By. II. 8. Pad. 9. Z1v. 10. Bljud. 11. Nes. 12. Mog. 13. D'i>iii. 14. Ev5t. 15. Vhk. 16. Vr*x.g. 17. Bég. 18. Gryz. 19. N. 20. G@d. Führt man diese verbalthemen auf die ihnen zu grunde liegenden wurzeln zurück, so erhält man p'1', dü, bü, ziv, l11d, dünn, cvit und grüz für pi, du, by, ziv, bljud, (hm, cv5t und gryz, woraus sich ergibt, dass die classen 3 und 7, 9 und 14, 10, 13 und 18 zusammenfallen. Gegen diese einteilung der themen, die sich in der bildung der nominal und der verbalstämme bewährt, ja in dieselbe erst licht und ordnung bringt, wird vielleicht principiell keine einwendung erhoben werden: berichtigungen einzelner ansätze werden selbstw1ständlich durch diese annahme nicht ausgeschlossen. Diese ein teilung beruht wesentlich auf demselben p1mczp wie G1 tmms einteilung' der sogenannten starken verba. Einem p1oteste uird jedoch, das sehe ich Üoraus, von mehr als einer seite die aufstellung von wurzeln wie st], br, Vlk, vrg begegnen. -ich sehe mich daher genötigt, meine diesen wichtigen punkt der slavischen lautlehre betreflende ansicht zu begründen.
