Vom Verlag wurde ich beauftragt, einen Ersatzband für das seit längerer Zeit vergriffene und bei ihm in mehreren Auflagen erschienene Buch des verstorbenen A. LOEWY über Versicherungsmathematik zu schreiben. In Erfüllung dieses Auftrages entschlo ich mich, vorerst einen "elementaren" Band und daran anschlie end einen zweiten "höheren" Band zu publizieren. Mit Rücksicht darauf, da es sich um eine elementare, für Studierende und Praktiker bestimmte Darstellung handeln soll, wählte ich die diskontinuierliche Methode. Von der Analysis und insbesondere von der Differential-und Integralrechnung wird im vorliegenden Band überhaupt nur im 8. Kapitel Gebrauch gemacht, Ausführungen, die nicht in direktem Zusammenhang mit den übrigel1 Kapiteln stehen. . Leser mit einer mathematischen Vorbildung, wie sie ungefähr ein Abiturient besitzt, können deshalb das ganze Buch mit Ausschlu dieses Kapitels und eventuell des Anhanges verstehen. Ii Anhang wurde der Zusammenhang zwischen der im Buch wie üblich benutzten deterministischen Annahme von festen Sterbetafeln und der Auffassung im Sinne der modernen Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung knapp dargestellt. Ich legte Wert darauf, die Hauptgrundlagen der Versicherungsmathematik und ihre in der Praxis benutzten Resultate möglichst scharf zu formulieren. In diesem Sirine dürfte das Buch vielleicht einige neue Aspekte gegenüber bisherigen Lehrbüchern bieten, vor allem in den Kapiteln über die Berechnung der Reserven, die Variation der Grundlagen, die Erneuerungstheorie und im Anhang.
