Jahrhunderts und stammt von Meringer und Mayer. Schon sie versuchten die von ihnen gefundenen Sprechfehler zu kategorisieren. Nicht nur, da unter den gesammelten Versprechern Ähnlichkeiten erkennbar sind, sondern auch, um die unterschiedlichen Phänomene vergleichbar zu machen, scheint eine Einteilung verschiedener Versprecher in Kategorien notwendig. Besonders bei der Entwicklung von Sprachproduktionstheorien ist die Möglichkeit, Versprecher vergleichen zu können, sehr hilfreich. Da Meringer und Mayer mit ihren Kategorisierungsansätzen die Ersten waren und spätere Einteilungen sich nicht selten auf die von ihnen vorgenommenen Unterscheidungen stützen stützen, soll damit begonnen werden. Im Anschluss folgen die darauf basierenden Kategorisierungen von Butterworth und Wiedenmann. Im Zuge der Kategorisierungen nach Wiedenmann wird das Aktivationsausbreitungsmodell erwähnt, dass einen sehr interessanten Aspekt darstellt, da es aufgrund von Versprecheranalysen entstanden ist (wie oben angesprochen). Fehleranalysen und aus demselben Grund also auch Verpsrecherkategorisierungen (da sie die Analyse vereinfachen) sind also ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Forschung. Da mit dem Aktivationsausbreitungsmodell bereits ein Sprachproduktionsmodell vorgestellt wird, ergibt sich auch die kurze Vorstellung eines zweiten. Basierend auf seinen Thesen zu Merkmalen von Versprechern hat Garrett sein serielles Stufenmodell der Sprachproduktion entwickelt. Ausgehend von seinen Merkmalsanalysen ist eine gewisse Kategorisierung von Versprechern seinerseits interpretierbar. Dies soll als letzte Kategorisierungsmöglichkeit in dieser Arbeit aufgeführt werden.
