Vorliegender Band nennt die wichtigsten Orte solcher versteckter Information, vor allem den Erläuterungswortschatz, den Nachweis tropischer (metaphorischer, metonymischer usw.) Wortgebräuche, die Symptomwertangaben und die Sacherläuterungen. In 15 Kapiteln werden Möglichkeiten beschrieben, die nicht alphabetisch zugängliche Information in philologisch aufbereiteten Registern überschaubar zu machen; an Hand umfänglicher Beispiele wird die Anlage der Register vorgeführt; dabei entsteht u.a. zum ersten Male in der Geschichte der deutschen Lexikographie eine Teilstrecke eines (vorläufigen) onomasiologischen Wörterbuches. Auch die ausschnittweise dargebotenen Register von Metaphern, Metonymien (und anderer tropischer Wortgebräuche) des Frühneuhochdeutschen sowie von raum-, zeit- und textsortengebundenen Wörtern sind von ihrer Anlage und ihrem Informationsgehalt her neuartig. Die vollständige Erschlie ung versteckter lexikographischer Daten würde nicht nur der Wort- und Sprachgeschichte, sondern auch anderen Disziplinen der Traditionsforschung (Geschichtswissenschaft, Rechtsgeschichte usw.) neue Möglichkeiten eröffnen; sie würde des weiteren dadurch zur Verbesserung der lexikographischen Praxis beitragen können, als dem Lexikographen eine Kontrolle über seine Daten an die Hand gegeben wird.
