Verzamelde werken I (Garmond-Editie) Bevat *Max Havelaar*, voorafgegaan door *Studiën over Multatuli* door C. Vosmaer. *Max Havelaar* (1860) is het bekendste werk van Multatuli, een aanklacht tegen de misstanden die hij had geconstateerd tijdens zijn werk als koloniaal ambtenaar in Nederlands-Indië. Na een conflict hierover met zijn superieuren voelt Douwes Dekker zich miskend en neemt ontslag (1856). Berooid keert hij terug naar Europa, waar hij in Brussel in twee maanden *Max Havelaar* schrijft met als doel 'het lot van den Javaan te verbeteren'. De kortzichtige, op winst beluste koloniale handelaar Droogstoppel is niet meer weg te denken uit de Nederlandse literatur en het taalgebruik. Douwes Dekker zelf komt nauwelijks verhuld voor als 'Sjaalman' = Max Havelaar, de idealistische ambtenaar. C. Vosmaer (1826-1888, dichter, essayist, tekenaar) was een bewonderaar en vriend van Douwes Dekker. Hij noemde hem "denker, dichter, satiricus, criticus, moralist, hervormer." In zijn Studiën nam hij het op voor Dekker en probeerde hij de reacties op Multatuli's werk en vooral *Max Havelaar* te verklaren: "Waarom heeft Nederland daarop geantwoord met lafheid, met laster, met verguizing (...)?" Volgens Vosmaer viel *Max Havelaar* buiten 'de bekende vakken' en werd daardoor in zijn tijd niet begrepen. Eduard Douwes Dekker (1820-1887), Nederlands schrijver, bekend onder het pseudoniem Multatuli (Latijn voor 'ik heb veel gedragen'). Douwes Dekker was van 1840 tot 1856 koloniaal ambtenaar in Nederlands-Indië (Indonesië). Na een conflict met zijn superieuren keerde Douwes Dekker miskend en berooid terug naar Europa. Zijn bekendste werk, Max Havelaar (1860), is een felle aanklacht tegen misstanden onder het koloniaal bewind en de inlandse regenten. Later publiceerde hij Ideën, met daarin de roman Woutertje Pieterse, toneelstukken en vele brieven. Door zijn humor, stylistische capaciteiten en zijn sociaal engagement is Multatuli ook nu nog een veel en graag gelezen auteur.
