The field of veterinary medicine deals with the treatment and prevention of animal diseases and injuries. A number of diseases occur in bovines, cats and dogs such as anthrax, buffalo pox, bovine mastitis, bladder stones, rabies, pyometra, brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome, diabetes, obesity, etc. Animals are also prone to injuries such as bite wounds and wounds acquired from stepping on or running into objects. Depending on the injury, wounds may be cleaned and sutured, explored, lavaged and debrided, or left open and allowed to heal. Orthopedic surgeries such as hip replacement, leg amputation, bone fracture repair, etc. may be done to manage traumatic injuries. Zoonoses, such as Ebola, salmonellosis, bird and swine flu, early HIV infections, etc. are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. These may be transmitted to humans through bites and saliva, or through air. Humans can also infect animals with diseases such as influenza, pneumonia, measles, tuberculosis and leishmaniasis.
