Tomás de Celano ingresó en la fraternidad en 1214 ó 1215, cuando San Francisco regresó de España, renunciando a su proyectado viaje a Marruecos. Dios en su bondad -escribe él mismo al referir el hecho- tuvo a bien acordarse de mí y de muchos otros... A poco de la vuelta del Santo a la iglesia de Santa María de la Porciúncula, se reunieron a él resueltamente algunos letrados y nobles (1 Cel 56s). En 1246, o, más exactamente, a partir de la decisión del capítulo general de 1244, Celano tuvo que asumir de nuevo la tarea de biógrafo oficial de San Francisco; esta vez por mandato del ministro general, Crescencio de Jesi. Así lo afirma en el prólogo. No habla, sin embargo, en nombre propio, sino como jefe de un equipo de compiladores: Plugo a la santa asamblea del capítulo general pasado y a vos, reverendísimo padre..., encomendar a nuestra pequeñez el encargo de escribir para consuelo de los presentes y recuerdo de los venideros, los hechos y los dichos del glorioso Padre nuestro Francisco; a nosotros que tuvimos de él un conocimiento mayor que los demás por el trato familiar y constante con él por espacio de muchos años. Todo hace pensar que Celano no fue solamente el encargado de sistematizar y dar forma al material recibido de los tres compañeros reunidos en Greccio -León, Ángel y Rufino- y de otros informadores, sino que él mismo formaba parte del grupo, a no ser que se trate de un mero gesto de cortesía fraterna para con los autores del florilegio, teniendo a la vista la carta con que ellos presentaban los relatos al ministro con fecha 11 de agosto de 1246. Esta identificación con sus colaboradores aparece en forma más viva en la plegaria final, dirigida a San Francisco: Mientras escribíamos, nos sentíamos bajo el dulce encanto de tu recuerdo, y quisiéramos hacerlo gustar a otros.... Que se trata, más bien, de un recurso literario, aparece a continuación en la petición que hace por sí mismo: Y te suplicamos con todo el afecto del corazón, padre benignísimo, por este hijo tuyo, que ahora y en otro tiempo escribió, por devoción, tus méritos; él, juntamente con nosotros, te ofrece y dedica esta obra, que ha logrado llevar a término... (2 Cel 221-24). Lo cierto es que las páginas de la Vida segunda, por la unidad de estilo, por el lenguaje, por la sistematización de los temas, ponen de manifiesto la mano de Celano como único responsable de la redacción.
