Besonders in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika hat sich dieses neue Medi-um schnell durchgesetzt, und es wurde zu einem neuen Lebensstil, ja zu einem Lebensgefühl. Bereits kleine Kinder verbringen dort mehrere Stunden pro Tag vor dem Fernseher, der in vie-len Fällen die Rolle eines Babysitters einnimmt. Gleichzeitig ist beinahe überall auf der Welt, aber auch wieder besonders stark in den USA, die Kriminalitätsrate, vor allem in den gro en Städten, immens angestiegen. Der Schluss liegt also nicht fern, dass diese beiden Phänomene auf irgendeine Art miteinander verknüpft sind. Wissenschaftler vieler Disziplinen befassen sich spätestens seit den sechziger Jahren zunehmend mit diesen Erscheinungen, und versuchen immer wieder nachzuweisen, dass das Fernsehen ein Grund für die angestiegene Gewalt ist, bzw. einen Zusammenhang der beiden Bestandteile unserer heutigen Gesellschaft zu beweisen. Es stellt sich also die zentrale Frage, in wie weit die heutige Funktion des Fernsehens als Informationsvermittler einen wie auch immer gearteten Einfluss auf die Meinungsbildung des Publikums hat. Diese Arbeit wird sich mit dem Ansatz George Gerbners und seinem Team der Annenberg School of Communication in Philadelphia auseinandersetzen.
