Produkte, die am Markt (fUr viel Geld) angeboten wurden, erwiesen sich jedoch bald als mit schweren Mangeln behaftet (zu langsam, zu groBer Speicherverbrauch, interne Feh- ler), die sie fur unsere Zwecke unbrauchbar machten. Daher entschlossen wir uns, unsere Grafikbibliothek selbst zu schreiben. Wir entschieden uns bewuBt dafur, nicht irgendeine selbst ausgedachte Schnittstelle zu implementieren, sondern im Interesse der Portabilitat die Schnittstelle des international genormten Grafischen Kernsystems, GKS, in der Programmiersprache C. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ist WESTgraf. WESTgraf ist eine umfangreiche Sammlung grafischer Unterprogramme auf der Grundlage der internationalen Norm fUr das Grafische Kernsystem, GKS (DIN 66252, ISO 7942) und des sen Sprachbindung an C (ISO 8651-4). WESTgraf ist ein Produkt, das sich an professionelle Programmentwickler richtet, die fur ihre An- wendungsprogramme leistungsfahige, gerateunabhangige grafische Ein-und/oder Ausgabe brauchen. GKS bietet fUr professionelle Entwickler gegenuber anderen Grafikbibliotheken einige entscheidende Vorteile: Normung. GKS ist eine international genormte Funktionsschnittstelle fUr zwei- dimension ale grafische Ein-und Ausgabe. Daher lassen sich Programme, die Grafik mit GKS erzeugen, leicht von einer Umgebung (Rechner, Betriebssy- stem, Programmiersprache) in eine andere ubertragen.
