Vindication of the Government of New England Churches is a book written by John Wise, a Congregationalist minister from Massachusetts, in 1717. The book defends the congregational system of church government against attacks from Presbyterian and Anglican critics. Wise argues that the congregational system, which gives each local church autonomy and allows members to participate in decision-making, is more in line with biblical teachings than hierarchical systems. He also defends the right of congregations to choose their own ministers and manage their own finances, rather than having these decisions made by external authorities. The book is significant because it reflects a larger debate about the nature of church governance in colonial America. At the time, many religious groups were vying for influence and trying to establish their own systems of authority. Vindication of the Government of New England Churches helped to solidify the position of the Congregationalists, who would go on to become one of the dominant religious groups in the region.1717. This work was drawn from antiquity; the light of nature; Holy Scripture; its noble nature; and from the dignity divine providence has put upon it. The Constitution of the New England churches as settled by their platform, may be fairly justified, from antiquity, the light of nature, Holy Scripture, and from the noble and excellent nature of the Constitution itself. And lastly from the providence of God dignifying it. Written in Old English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
