Questa "Vita di Maria" è il libro più commovente e famoso tra quelli nati dal sodalizio tra la monaca stigmatizzata tedesca Anna Katharina Emmerick (1774-1824) e il poeta romantico Clemens Brentano (1778-1842). La Emmerick, figlia di poveri contadini, aveva fin da bambina visioni dettagliatissime della vita di Gesù, della Madonna e dei santi e negli ultimi sei anni della sua vita, quando - malatissima - era costretta permanentemente a letto, le raccontò a Brentano, che le trascrisse fedelmente e dopo la morte di lei le strutturò programmando vari volumi. "La Vita di Maria" inizia raccontando la storia dei progenitori della Vergine, molti dei quali erano esseni, un gruppo religioso che nutriva in maniera particolarmente intensa la speranza della nascita del Messia, e ne descrive poi la nascita prodigiosa e l'educazione al tempio; narra con grande dovizia di particolari la vita di Giuseppe e della sua famiglia, il suo matrimonio con Maria, la nascita di Gesù e i primi anni di vita del Redentore, sino alla persecuzione di Erode, la fuga in Egitto e il ritorno a Nazareth, avvenuto quando Gesù aveva otto anni. Nell'ultima parte del libro sono narrati gli ultimi anni di vita di Maria a Efeso, dove Giovanni l'aveva portata qualche tempo dopo la crocifissione, la sua morte in quella città, l'assunzione al cielo e l'inizio della predicazione degli apostoli. I testi di Anna Katharina Emmerick, che hanno tutti l'imprimatur, ampliano e arricchiscono senza alcuna contraddizione le scarne notizie della Sacra Scrittura, inducendo il lettore a sentire più vicini i personaggi evangelici colti nella loro umanità e quotidianità oltre che nella loro divinità, e a meditare quindi più profondamente sui grandi misteri della nostra fede.
