Gehört wird auf die unerkannt im Wort mitschwingenden Bedeutungsfacetten, die man aufdeckt, indem man den Stammbaum der Wörter freilegt. Man erkennt dann staunend, dass für einen geübten Hörer beim alltäglichen Sprechen mehr gesagt wird, als der Sprecher selbst vermutet. Wörter sind nicht nur isolierte Symbole, die man zu beliebigen Aussagen verkettet. Sie bilden ein Netzwerk gewachsener Landmarken des Denkens, das auf verborgenen Pfaden einen regen Austausch wirksamer Bilder betreibt. Als mögliche Antwort auf unlösbare Fragen schlägt das Buch also vor, den Sinn jener Wörter auszuloten, aus denen die Frage besteht. Statt nach der Antwort zu suchen, versucht man zunächst die Frage besser zu verstehen. Die Methode des Autors ist explorativ. Ohne am Anfang der Kapitel zu wissen, wohin die Fahrt führen wird, überlässt er den Wörtern das Ruder und beschränkt seinen Einfluss darauf, ein Segel intuitiver Phantasie in den Wind des Geschehens zu setzen. So lässt er sich zu neuen Ufern treiben, wo der Boden verrät, dass es sich lohnt, nach Schätzen zu graben. Resultat dieser spracharchäologischen Methode, Wörter beim Wort zu nehmen, sind 36 Essays, deren abstrakten Hauptdarstellern der Autor teils analytisch streng, teils spielerisch das Wort erteilt, damit sie von ihren verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen erzählen, um beim Leser die Lust zu wecken, sich beim Hören einzelner Wörter Zeit zu lassen.
