About The Book

IV wurf nicht erspart werden, daB sie zu lange gebraucht haben, urn diese Tat- sache richtig zu erkennen und vor allem, urn die richtigen Konsequenzen daraus zu ziehen. Auch an den osterreichischen technischen Hochschulen, die hin- sichtlich der Ausbildung ihrer Absolventen nieht nur in den praktischen, sondern vor allem auch in den theoretischen Fachern stets einen recht guten Ruf hatten, hat man in der Zeit zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen Zahl und AusmaB der rein praktischen Vorlesungen auf Kosten der theoretischen Facher immer mehr vergroBert. Das stand aber in direktem Gegensatz zu den Erfordernissen der industriellen Praxis, und das Ergebnis war, daB die Industrie fUr die wissen- schaftliche Arbeit in steigendem MaBe Universitatsabsolventen heranzog, weil sie eben auf die praktische Ausbildung eher verzichten konnte als auf die theo- retische. Es war hochste Zeit, hier eineUmkehr einzuleiten, sollten die technischen Hochschulen nieht gegeniiber den Universitaten einerseits und den technischen Mittelschulen anderseits ilire Existenzberechtigung iiberhaupt verlieren. Die Wiener Hochschule hat jedenfaHs die Gelegenheit, die sich vor vier Jahren bot, geniitzt und eine weitgehende Reform des Studienplanes zugunsten der 'grundlegenden Facher durchgefUhrt; sie ist damit aus einer besseren Fachschule wieder eine wissenschaftliche Lehr-und Forschungsstatte geworden. Darin also besteht meine Rechtfertigung dafiir, daB ich diese Vorlesungen in Buchform herausgebe. Bei einem solchen Vorhaben ist natiirlich ein einwand- freies Herausarbeiten der grundlegenden Begriffe ganz besonders geboten. Ich habe gesagt, daB der moderne Techniker ein guter Mathematiker sein muB.
