Ihr Objekt ist das Gebiet der Massenerscheinungen und Wiederholungsvorgange, wie das Objekt der Geometrie die Gesamtheit der Raumerscheinun- gen ist. Durch Abstraktion und Idealisierung, die nur zum Teil freie Tatigkeiten des Geistes sind, wird ein System von Grundbegriffen geschaffen und darauf ein logisches Gebaude errichtet, das Schllisse auf die Wirklichkeit erlaubt vermoge der Zusammenhange, die zwi- schen den Grundbegriffen und den beobachteten Elementarerschei- nungen bestehen. Quantitative Wahrscheinlichkeit muf5 definiert wer- den mit Beziehung zu unbegrenzt gedachten Folgen von Beobachtun- gen oder Experimenten; andernfalls ist eine rational begrlindete Anwendung auf die Wirklichkeit nicht moglich. Die relative Hau- figkeit der Wiederholung ist das "MaW' der Wahrscheinlichkeit, wie die Ausdehnung der Quecksilbersaule das "MaiS" der Tempe- ratur ist. - Dies sind die Grundgedanken der neuen Auffassung, die bei ihrem ersten Auftreten als ein volliger Bruch mit allgemein angenommenen Anschauungen erschien, heute aber in einem gewis- sen Grade Gemeingut fast aller Autoren geworden ist, die sich mit den Grundlagen der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung befassen.
