Dieses Buch entstand in der Absicht, Gefallen am Planen und Ent- scheiden mit Hilfe von Warteschlangenmodellen zu wecken. Anschau- lichkeit und Anwendungsnahe des dargebotenen Stoffes sollen diese Absicht unterstutzen. Die ausgewahlten Beispiele sind vorwiegend dem Bereich "Krankenhaus- und Gesundheitswesen" entnommen, da sich das Buch vor allem an Personen wenden will, die betraut sind mit der Planung, Erstellung, Leitung und Verwaltung von Einrichtungen des Gesundheitswesens oder sich auf derartige Aufgaben vorbereiten. Der Inhalt des Buches ist in sieben Kapitel unterteilt. Nach einer Darstellung des alltaglichen Charakters der Warteschlangenprobleme und deren unterschiedlichen Wertung in Kapitel 1, werden in Kapitel 2 Beispiele aus dem Krankenhaus- und dem Gesundheitswesen vorgestellt. Kapitel 3 nimmt diese Beispiele wieder auf und entwickelt an ihnen durch schrittweises Abstrahieren das Warteschlangenmodell; das Ka- pitel schlieBt mit einer Typisierung von Wartesystemen. Der in der Praxis wichtigen Frage nach den Grenzen der einfachen Anwendbarkeit des Modellansatzes widmet sich Kapitel 4. Damit ist der hinfuhrende Teil des Buches abgeschlossen. In Kapitel 5 werden Beispiele fur haufig vorkommende Wartesituationen mit realistischen Zahlen be- handelt. Auf das Wiedererkennen der modellhaften Zusammenhange in den realen Betriebsablaufen wird dabei besonderer Wert gelegt. Ein eigenes Kapitel 6 ist den Simulationsmethoden bei der Losung von Wartesystemproblemen gewidmet. Interessierte finden hier einige Erlauterungen uber das Vorgehen bei nicht geschlossen losbaren Fragestellungen. Das letzte Kapitel zieht aus den vorausgehenden Kapiteln die SchluBfolgerungen fur das praktische Vorgehen.
