Mit ihr können Gefühle, Erlebnisse, Bedürfnisse und Fakten vermittelt werden. Die Universalität der Sprache ermöglicht es den Menschen, sich über die Grenzen von Raum und Zeit hinweg mitzuteilen. Eine Fähigkeit, die diese Universalität ermöglicht, ist die Schriftsprache. Beispielsweise können wir die Überlieferungen des griechischen Historikers Thukydides lesen und bekommen ein Bild vom Peloponnesischen Krieg, ohne selbst auf dem Schlachtfeld gewesen zu sein. Die Fähigkeiten Lesen und Schreiben erleichtern das Leben in unserer Gesellschaft und sind eine unverzichtbare Voraussetzung für die Ausübung vieler Berufe. Zum Beispiel könnte man diese Arbeit nicht verstehen, ohne das Lesen zu beherrschen. Aufgrund des universellen Charakters der Sprache wird leicht übersehen, dass die Schriftsprache in erster Linie ein abstraktes Symbolsystem ist, dessen Beherrschung einen komplexen Lernprozess erfordert, dem unter anderem das Gehirn als organische Struktur zugrunde liegt. So lernen Kinder zuerst das Lesen, um dann im nächsten Entwicklungsschritt zu lesen, um zu lernen. Dabei ist das Lesen nicht nur Mittel zur Informationsaufnahme: auch Emotionen und Empathie können durch Bücher vermittelt werden. Bei ca. 3-5% der deutschen Grundschülerinnen und Grundschüler ist der Lernprozess gestört und sie leiden an einer Lesestörung. Diese Arbeit möchte einen Überblick über die Teilleistungsstörung Dyslexie geben. Die Ursachen dieser Störung werden intensiv und teilweise kontrovers diskutiert. Die verbreitetsten und anerkanntesten Hypothesen sollen hier vorgestellt und erläutert werden, ebenso wie die Diagnostik und Therapie der Dyslexie.
