Die Forschungsfrage lautet dementsprechend: "Warum trat Litauen der NATO bei?". Dieses Thema ist von gro er Relevanz, da die osteuropäischen Regionen als geopolitisch umstritten gelten. Auf der einen Seite steht die NATO und auf der anderen Seite Russland, die beide Interesse an diesen Gebieten haben. Zu Beginn werde ich das Fallbeispiel "Litauens NATO-Beitritt" erklären. Daraufhin wird die hier angewendete Theorie des Neorealismus erläutert. Herausgearbeitet werden die wichtigsten Thesen, die dabei helfen, die Forschungsfrage zu beantworten. Im folgenden Analyseteil werden diese Thesen geprüft und mit dem Sachverhalt verglichen. Die Analyse besteht aus drei Teilen, die jeweils einer These des Neorealismus zugeordnet wird. Die in der Analyse verwendeten Quellen sind Aussagen und Aufsätze hoher litauischer Politiker, wissenschaftliche Betrachtungen auf litauische Sicherheitsdokumente und Sicherheitsdiskurse, ein YouTube-Video der NATO, Zeitungsartikel, sowie Zahlen und Daten des "Stockholm International Peace Research Institute" (sipri), des "Munich Security Report 2018" und des "Globalfirepower Index". Abschlie end werden die daraus resultierenden Erkenntnisse diskutiert, die Forschungsfrage beantwortet und letztendlich die Arbeit in einem Fazit zusammengefasst.
