Obwohl der konventionelle Weg über die Banken, Geld zu transferieren sicher, schnell und bereits kostengünstig ist, besteht ein fortwährendes Interesse am Thema Kryptowährung. Die Vorstellung einer Währung, die die zentralen Kontrollmechanismen umgeht und somit institutionellen Herrschaftsanspruch schmälern könnte, ist 2008 umgesetzt worden und als Bitcoin bekannt geworden. Aus einer soziologischen Betrachtungsweise wird das Wirkungskonzept von Kryptowährungen am Beispiel von Bitcoin erläutert. Seit Jahrhunderten werden Geschäftsbücher von Banken dafür verwendet, Kontobewegungen zu registrieren und in Datenbanken zu sichern. So verwenden auch Behörden Grundbücher, um Besitzverhältnisse von Grundeigentümern zu dokumentieren und zu verwalten. Diese sensiblen Daten werden so verwaltet, dass sie zu jedem Zeitpunkt die konkret abgefragten Besitzverhältnisse offen legen und nachvollziehen können. So soll sichergestellt werden, dass Geld nicht doppelt ausgegeben und Immobilien nicht fälschlicherweise von einer unbefugten Person veräu ert werden.Dieses System verlangt Vertrauen - das Vertrauen der Bevölkerung in staatlichen Institutionen. Kauft A Beispielsweise Ware von B, so muss A kein Vertrauen in B haben, aber beide müssen darin Vertrauen, dass C - in diesem Fall die Bank - die Transaktion korrekt ausführt.
