Diese humorvoll intendierte Aussage, die vor einiger Zeit so oder ähnlich einmal zu lesen war, illustriert anschaulich die Wahrnehmung eines globalen funktionalen Zusammenhanges, die - wenngleich in der Zuweisung von Funktionen zu Kontinenten provokativ übertrieben - empirisch in abgewandelter Form zunächst nicht völlig unberechtigt scheint. Global nachweisbare Funktions- und Vernetzungszusammenhänge können mehr oder minder umkommentiert angenommen werden, sind aber letztendlich für die systemtheoretische Betrachtung irrelevant. Vielmehr steht die Frage im Mittelpunkt, inwieweit der Begriff einer Weltgesellschaft genutzt werden kann und inwiefern es sinnvoll ist, von einer Weltgesellschaft zu sprechen. Als Referenz dient hierbei die systemtheoretische Betrachtung von Niklas Luhmann. Um zu erklären, was Luhmann mit dem Begriff der Weltgesellschaft meint, ist es unerlässlich, anhand von kurzen Einschüben die wesentlichen Grundbegriffe einzuführen, mit denen Luhmann in seiner allgemeinen Theorie der sozialen Systeme operiert. Die Arbeit widmet sich einem Komplex von Fragen gleicher Zielrichtung, nämlich inwiefern Luhmanns Konzeption von Weltgesellschaft ein begrifflich konsistentes Instrumentarium zur Wirklichkeitsbeschreibung liefert und wieweit dessen Anspruch auf universelle Plausibilität reichen kann. Wo endet die Erklärungskraft dieser Theorie? Handelt es sich vielleicht sogar um ein reines Ansichtsmodell ohne weiterführende Funktion und praktische Implikation?
