Die erste Auflage dieses Buches - 1939 - war nach zwei Jahren bereits vergriffen. Die VerhliJtnisse der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit brachten es mit sich, daB erst 1949 mit der Bearbeitung der zweiten Auflage begonnen werden konnte. Die Rohstoffnot des vergangenen Jahrzehnts zwang Deutschland, die Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Lagerwerkstoffe besonders vorwarts zu treiben. Die reichen Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungen bedingten eine vollige Neubearbeitung der einzelnen Absatze und eine Umstellung. Die Abschnitte Grundlagen der Konstruktion und Prufung der Lager sind entfallen. Das, was fur die Lagerwerkstoffe davon noch in Frage kam, ist mit dem Abschnitt Priifung und Bewertung der Gleitlagerwerkstoffe vereinigt worden, der den ersten Teil des Buches bildet. Der dadurch entstandene Raum- gewinn kam dem zweiten und dritten Teil zugute. Der zweite Teil enthalt jetzt die metallischen GIeitstoffe und wurde urn die Abschnitte Silber und GuBeisen vermehrt. In den dritten Teil sind die nicht- metallischen GIeitstoffe aufgenommen. Zusatzlich wurden noch Holz und Kohle eingefugt. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind, soweit moglich, in die Abschnitte Allgemeines, Aufbau, Eigenschaften, Erfahrungen auf dem Prufstand und im Betriebe eingeteilt. Der Verlag hat das Buch wieder bestens ausgestattet. Ihm sei dafUr vielmals gedankt, ebenso den Herren Verfassern der einzelnen Absatze, denen es bei"ihrer heutigen Bean- spruchung - sie sind teils an Hochschulen, teils bei Behorden, teils in Herstellerbetrieben tatig - nicht leicht wurde, auch fur diese Arbeit noch die notige Zeit aufzubringen. Ferner danke ich HeITn R. Buch- mann fUr die Unterstiitzung bei den Korrekturarbeiten.
