Es ist das Ziel des Buches, das Wesen der aldigyptischen Kul- tur zu beschreiben, nicht eine Kulturgeschichte zu geben. Die unver- wechselbare Eigenart, wie sie am augenfalligsten in der agyptischen Kunst zutage tritt, soll an moglichst zahlreichen Erscheinungen der Kultur aufgezeigt werden, also nicht allein in der Kunst, sondern auch der Literatur, der Gesellschaft, der Geschichtsschreibung usw. Denn, wer die Dinge naher anschaut, wird schnell gewahr, daB die unverwechselbare Eigenart, der Kulturstil, sich in allen AuBerungen dieser Kultur wieder finden laBt. Die groBartige Einheitlichkeit des Agyptischen ist also der Gegenstand dieser Darstellung. Frei- lich waren der agyptischen Kultur offenbar bestimmte Grenzen gezogen, deren Einhaltung oft den Eindruck eines bewuBten Ver- zichtes auf Leistungen macht, die zu verwirklichen scheinbar so nahe gelegen hatte. Urn das deutlich zu machen, bemuhe ich mich, am konkreten Einzelbeispiel auch auf die Punkte hinzuweisen, an denen eine eingeschlagene Entwicklungsrichtung schein bar abge- brochen wird, ein erwarteter Schritt nicht getan worden ist. So ergab sich die Notwendigkeit, das Wesen dieser Kultur nicht nur als etwas sozusagen Statisches zu beschreiben, sondern auch die Hauptlinien ihrer Wandlungen herauszuarbeiten. Der hierfur zur Verfugung stehende, notwendig beschrankte Raum erwies sich dabei als ein Vorteil. Zwang er doch dazu, die charakteristischen Linien ubersichtlich herauszuarbeiten, und gab die Freiheit, bekannte Einzelerscheinungen unter sie einende Ge- sichtspunkte zu stellen und in groBerem Zusammenhang zu ver- deutlichen. Die gesellschaftliche Gliederung und ihre Entwicklung, das Erscheinen der Stadt, aber auch geistige Gebilde wie die Osiris- my the konnen in neuem Lichte gesehen und dargestellt werden.
