Es war die Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Ende der 1950er Jahre plante man in der Sowjet-union den Test einer Rakete, die fähig sein sollte, einen atomaren Sprengkopf in die USA zu tragen. Dazu stand in der Spitze der R-7 ein Raum von einem Kubikmeter zur Verfügung. Die Konstrukteure hätten ein paar Sandsäcke als Nutzlast verwenden können. Aber warum nicht etwas Sinnvolles tun? Nun entschloss man sich, weitgehend ignoriert von der Führung in Moskau, als Payload einen Satelliten zu bauen. Am 4. Oktober 1957 flog eine kleine, polierte Metallkugel um die Erde. Sputnik sandte ein Funksignal, das von Radioamateuren rund um den Globus gehört wurde. Das war ein Paukenschlag. Sputnik war in den Schlagzeilen sämtlicher Zeitungen der westlichen Welt. In Washington fragte man sich: Wenn die Sowjets einen solchen Satelliten starten können, sind sie dann auch in der Lage, uns mit mächtigen Atomraketen anzugreifen? Es sollte noch schlimmer kommen. Am 12. April 1961 umkreiste Juri Gagarin als erster Mensch in seinem Raumschiff Vostok 1 die Erde. In Moskau ging das Politbüro nun davon aus, dass alle Staaten der Erde über kurz oder lang kommunistisch werden würden. Man war auf dem Weg zum Sieg des Sozialismus. Mit Sputnik hatte die Geschichte der Menschheit eine unerwartete Wendung genommen. In den USA bekamen die Raketenbauer um Wernher von Braun, die bisher in Huntsville, Alabama, eher unauffällig gearbeitet hatten, ihre gro e Chance. In der Sowjetunion paarte sich Grö enwahn mit Leichtsinn, die USA holten Schritt um Schritt auf. Ein junger Präsident im Wei en Haus, John F. Kennedy, setzte den Raketen-bauern ein ehrgeiziges Ziel: "Bringt innerhalb von zehn Jahren einen Amerikaner auf den Mond, und holt ihn heil zurück."
