When The Sun Came Out At Night, is the first in a series of illustrated stories that E.H. de la Espriella compiled from the childhood conversations he had with his brother once they were tucked into bed at night. The sun became a symbol of escape for the brothers while they dealt with life's challenges. The stories reflect the fantasy that only children can create in their minds. These stories are borrowed and inspired from the author's award-winning novel Sun Night.


When The Sun Came Out At Night takes place on an island with a menacing volcano far away in the Pacific ocean. The protagonists of this story are Koa, Hana, and their children Elio and Aolani. One night after dinner, Koa's family senses the earth shaking under their feet and watches how in a fantastical way, the sun makes the night into day right in front of their eyes.

de la Espriella, E. H.: - E.H. de la Espriella is an award-winning author and designer born and raised in Panama. He is a creative leader at The Walt Disney Company and enjoys painting in oils, collage, drawing, and photography. Mr. de la Espriella lives in the Orlando area with his family. When The Sun Came Out At Night was inspired by the author's first book, Sun Night, based on his childhood conversations with his brother once they were tucked into bed at night. It is a dramatic and visually stunning tale of the two brothers growing up in 1976 Panama and follows the events that would transform their young lives forever.

Guillén, Sergio: - Sergio Guillén is a Costa Rican artist and illustrator that graduated with a degree in fine arts painting from the Universidad de Costa Rica and a master's in illustration from the University of the Arts London. He likes to create worlds with both traditional and digital painting, his images appearing in small books and large format murals. When he is not drawing, he enjoys spending time with his family and teaching others how to draw.
