After the earthquake of 2010, the Haitian medical system was grossly understaffed and unable to care for the victims. Poverty, malnourishment and vast homelessness reached levels unprecedented. Following the disaster, Doc Tipu begins his journey with the relief program headed by Project Medishare. From disaster relief tent hospitals to the ravaged city general hospital; Doc Tipu is forced to make difficult decisions with few resources and little medical help. Tipu Vahid Khan is an American physician whose published writing has covered a variety of topics from philosophical articles to peer-reviewed reports for national journals and textbooks. After the Haitian earthquake of 2010, Doc Tipu travelled numerous times to Haiti to help first in the disaster response phase, then in the healing phase, and finally in the reconstruction phase. Doc Tipu has dedicated his life to working with the poor and underserved, both here and abroad. During his career he has been involved in the student/resident physician run free clinic system - having opened clinics in Sacramento, Seattle, and Orange County California. Doc Tipu completed his residency training in Family Medicine at Harbor-UCLA L.A. County Medical Center and then went further to complete a fellowship in Obstetrics at The University of Southern California. He currently works at the UMMA Community Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center for the underserved in South Los Angeles. He enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, writing, medical political activism, and jiu-jitsu.
