Most whittling guides hand a beginner a spoon or a bowl and hope a recognizable figure turns up later. This book does the opposite from its first page. It teaches figures directly, and it sets a short technique chapter before every project, so no cut or grip ever arrives on the page unpracticed.

From Perching Bird to Standing Farmer

Carve five figures in careful sequence: a bird, a gnome, a fox, an old man, and a farmer
Build every one of them from the same four cuts: the push, the pull, the stop, and the sweep
Read the wood grain before each cut so the blade slices clean instead of tearing the fibres
Hold the knife in two safe grips that keep the edge travelling away from your bracing hand
Block a face from three simple planes, then set it from calm to curious with a few small cuts
Suggest fur, a beard, or hair with adjustable texture lines you control by depth and spacing
Layer carved clothing, add a relief accent, and mount a finished figure onto its own base

Work the five figures in the order given and the fifth comes easier than the first, even though the farmer asks for far more of a carver than the bird ever did.
